639. Naval Surface Weapons Center. Dahlgren Laboratory, Virginia. 1975, - 24 p.Results from an elementary heat transfer analysis show that certain bore coatings, on the order of 10 piu in thickness and acting only as insulative thermal barriers, can reduce bore surface heat transfer to levels significantly below that present in gun barrels having no such coatings. A necessary aspect of the analysis was the determination of the convection coefficient applicable to the inside exposed surface of a gun barrel at a given axial location. The time-dependent value of this coefficient was based upon a solution to an inverse conduction problem in which the convective heat flux at the barrel inside surface was estimated by utilizing a measured history at the bore surface.Contents:
