This book has two aims. The first is to give a full picture of the development of European architecture during the last 2,500 years, using as illustrations over a hundred of the most beautiful and most important buildings of every European country. The second is to stress an inherent element of architecture which has hitherto been neglected by even the most valuable illustrated works on the subject — color. All one has seen in the past were gradations of light and shade which cannot recapture a building as a whole. Architectural works, however, depend largely, even principally, on color.
